espace cambelt/crankshaft

help needed my 95 espace just stopped no noise and when it turns the crankshaft only turns the cambelt for a few turns and then stops it does however carry on turning the fan belt.if i then turn the crank with a spanner to the point of going tight and then turn the engine via ignition it all turns ok again for a few turns then stops again.i understand i have now knocked out the timing but hey thats the least of my worries.thanx

If you take off the oil filler cap and get someone to turn the engine over you might be able to see if the camshaft is turning, if not part of the drive from the fanbelt to the camshaft must have broke. ��� I am afraid.

Sounds like the cambelt drive gear has sheared its key on the crankshaft and is now free to turn over most of its 360 degrees, it probably only gets tight where the key lines up with the keyway. This will have had the same effect as breaking the cambelt as far as the engine is concerned, so if the espace is one where the pistons hit the valves it could be quite expensive to repair.
