Recorded Delivery Parcel - But Not For Me!

I've had a card from Royal Mail through the door to say they tried to deliver something recorded delivery but I wasn't in, so they've left it with a shop along the street instead. Trouble is the name on the card isn't mine! Do I go and collect it and "return to sender"? Or what?!!

There's no one with that name I know of on this street either.

Help!!

I'd go and pick it up, and then take it to your nearest post office. Or, if you prefer, if the card has the tracking number on it then you can phone Royal Mail and let them know.

Take the card to your nearest post office (or sorting office, whichever is nearest) explain the above story to the staff and leave it with them to sort out.

There is a scam where a parcel is delivered with the wrong name, then you get a call asking you to forward it to the correct person thus costing you the postage and then you will be chased for the cost of the goods - The scam was posted on AB.


If its not yours, return to sender would be best - but get proof of posting.

I suppose the shop will do something with it if you run along and tell them its not for you.

Alternatively, you could just write 'incorrect delivery address & recipient' on the card and take it to the post office avoiding any dealings with the goods.

If I took it to a post office what would they do? Not sure if RM would think they've done their job (delivering it) and wouldn't be bothered?

If there is any doubt I wouldn't want to touch the goods. Ring Royal Mail and explain the situation to them - it is them who delivered it and left it at another address. Make a note of the time of call and who you spoke to.

Don't you think it's highly unlikely that a recorded delivery parcel would be left with a shop? I do. They have to be tracked and signed for with quite a process to follow.

Aren't you usually given the option of naming another day for delivery, anyway?

I thought that was strange, unless it is a shop with a post office in it or a common place they leave things or right next door or a door or so away.

It says on the card they left it with the shop - which is about 30 seconds walk away!

As others have said just leave it to the post office /Royal Mail to sort out (but if you return the card to them I'd take a copy to show it didn't have your name on.
Or just do nothing. Either the scammer will go to the shop and take it, or he'll ask you for the card, or the shop will bring it to your house.
I'd tell the parcel delivery people to sort it out.

Looked at the card again and it wasn't recorded delivery, just parcel too big to put through letterbox. Still not for me tho so think ill phone RM tomorrow and as you say, let them deal with it. Thank you for all your replies!

Doesn't it say that if you do nothing the parcel will be returned to sender? It did when this happened to me a couple of weeks ago. It's not your parcel so I would just ignore it and let the PO return it to sender.

i would be inclined to go along and pick it up - the postwoman could always have written the name down wrong

I phoned RM. They said if I was sure it definitely wasn't for me (I'm sure!), then I should just ignore it. The people at the shop would have to give it back to the postman. I'm not expecting a parcel in any case, but the name bears no resemblance to mine and no one has ever lived here called that! I'll do nothing but keep the card, just in case ...
