Maybe this is the origin . . .

Birds do it, bees do it,
Even educated fleas do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
--Cole Porter, "Let's Do It"

Bees pollunate flowers by flying from male to female plant, birds carry seeds away to be pollunated elsewhere. it's a good basic starting point when teaching a youngster the Facts of Life.

My Auntie used to sing me a song when I was little:
Tell me a story, tell me a story, tell me a story and then I'll got to bed......
Tell me about the birds and bees and how the apples grow on trees........
Tell me a story and then I'll go to bed.

As I was about 5 years old not entirely sure how appropriate it was, but I suppose I thought it was one of those nonsense songs!
