This is scheduled to start from March 2014. You are allowed an opt-out if you are so minded, but the onus is on you to contact your surgery if that's what you wish to do.

A reasonably simple and balanced article on the objectives, pros and cons of the scheme can be found in "Wired", for those interested.

Thanks for that link Lazygun, it was very informative and has made me change my mind from my first decision. I'll be calling into the quacks tomorrow morning.

I posted this guide to the planned scheme in the other thread, but it might be worth reposting for those interested ;

It is not happening in Scotland, NI or Wales, apparently.

"This will happen across England. It will not affect you if you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. If you live in Scotland or Wales, but are looked after by a GP in England, your data will be shared in the same way. You have the same right to opt out."

Lazy Gun - I read the wired article but my brain is all over the place just now and it was totally nonsensical (is that a 'real' word)? I am never very focused but this is like being manic without the feel-good element.

Anyway now you post that us up here in Scotland are not going to affected. All that brain power I used in trying to understand.

I was recently signed up for another scheme by the scheming NHS. I think that it was called 'Share' - something about using leftover blood from tests to do research on. I have to admit that I just assumed that they would have just automatically done this. It isn't as if I am going ask for the couple of drops back that they didn't need.

Off to Tesco.com to buy cat food now. :-)

@Wolf Heh :) Sorry to have wasted the brain cells on something unnecessary for you.

I think the NHS Share scheme in Scotland is sort of similar to this one under discussion, the big difference being they are asking you if you wish to opt-in, rather than requiring you to make the effort to opt-out if you do not want personal data being shared, even if anonymised. Much better to do it that way.
Here's an opt-out form, I put this on the other thread as well http://medconfidential.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/caredata_trifold.pdf
