I have started taking my puppy for walks recently and am wondering what my legal rights are to walk him down the edge of an arable field, where the edge aprox 20 foot width sometimes more, has been left wild. I would not go near the cultivated part of the field.

It depends if it a public right of way as shown on the 'defnitive map' or not. If it isn't you're trespassing. Contact your local highway authority, their definitive map may even be viewable on the net. If a public footpath actually runs across the cultivated part and has not been reinstated then the landowner is committing an offence, but if you are able to walk around the edge unhindered I wouldn't make a fuss about it.

Could you not ask the landowner if you may walk your dogs on their land?

farmers around here are leaving a strip to help the wildlife i was told by one of the people who works on the farms that it is a 2000.00 fine how true this is i dont know i didnt try to find out we have a foot path that runs across the middle of the field at the back of my house and people dont bother to stick to it they walk round the edge of the field and let their dogs run into my paddocks and chase my horse thank fully hes used to dogs as i have 2 ,also be careful as when they spray the fields it wont do your puppy any good. hope hes all better now
