Self Assessment Help (What Can You Claim For)
What else can you claim for when doing your Self Assessment.
My husband is self employed as a Motor Mechanic and I'm in middle of filling his SA form ... he's claimed for petrol, car insurance, car tax, mobile phone and his personal pension. Is there anything else I have forgot for him!?
HELP - I'm new to doing this!
Didn't know what was automatically covered in his Personal Allowance!

To be honest, for what it costs, you'd be better off getting an accountant to do it.
I'm a window cleaner and apart from the obvious costs such as cost of ladders/window cleaning equipment; motoring expenses, my accountant also claims for:
Use of home as office,
protective clothing,
cleaning and laundry,
insurances,
telephone,
printing - stationery and postage,
accountancy charges,
incidental expenses.
Get your skates on if you don't want to incur a fine.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I have filled in all the outgoings that I know of plus pension stuff and the rest of the form so it's all ready to go when my hubby has quickly checked it ... then I will fire it off and pay whatever straight away online. I just didn't want to miss anything out that he could claim for.
I thought stationary but he keeps saying that would fall under his personal allowance? Plus I don't know where his invoice is for the business cards should he be asked for it

Personal allowance is for you to keep for your living expenses. Anything that you use for the business can be claimed for (next year if you missed it this year).
If there are things that you use at home and for business e.g. home phone then you can split the cost.
They may never ask to see the invoices, I've never been asked, though I am very part time (one or two evenings a month), so often they send me a short form where I work it out and just put the final figures in not the details.
