TV screen gone funny colours
13 Answers
My tv has suddenly gone weird. The colours on the screen are all purple and green. Is there anything that can be done or am I now without a tv? :o(
Cheers for any help.

I was reckoning that it could be the tube, as this has happed before (not in quite the same 'oil slick' way though).
Am I going to pay a fortune for that to get fixed though. Although it would cost a lot to buy a new tv of the same size.
Could it all go tits up from now on and this is just the start...
ACK!

Hey thanks for the answers...
It has been turned off for a bit when I was out and so on and it's no different. I am watching it in black and white at the moment.
The screen (visible) is 26" corner to corner.
No magents that I can see nearby and nothing had changed before it broke. No speakers either. I live alone so I don't know how that could have happened, although I am a bit dim at times!
I faffed about with the tv when I noticed the problem and nothing seems out of place. It is in the same state whether DVD, tv or video.
Just to make matters worse my mobile phone has also cacked up!! ****, ****, ****!!

Maybe the red is hiding leaving blue and green. This could be simple as a poor conection (this is where a whack might help, if you don't knock something else loose) or serious as a new screen, (buy a new TV). If somethings loose or a small part is bad may be worth repair if you can get a "$?" quote. If the black and white looks normal (not tinted) the screen is probably OK. If it is tinted it still could be something else.
Thanks again for the aswers!
Where would I find a "DeGuass" button? Remote or tv? I am going to faff about with it again over the weekend to see what I can do (or can't!).
The black and white is tinged. There's a bit of purple and yellow in the top left corner.
Oh, and why do I have stars at the end of my ast reply?! I didn't do any swearing. Or mention anything after my phone!!

It's not that common for a tv to have a 'degauss' button. The degauss circuit works automatically when you switch the tv on and demagnetises the screen. The circuit is controlled by a thermister and this has probably failed. As I said, it is not a big job, but an engineer will charge labour. I haven't been in the trade for a few years, so I don't know what they charge these days, but I don't think you should pay more than about 40 or so. They'll charge more if they have to come to you, though. Doesn't sound like the tube's at fault.
