My 14 yr old cross border terrier injured himself coming downstairs yesterday morning, I didn't see this but heard him yelp. He was dragging one back leg for a while but seemed to recover movement after a while and was OK, even going outside. During the night he'd been up and down stairs but this morning both back legs are weak and he's very unsteady. Doesn't seem to be in much pain though. Of course this would happen on A Sunday, vet is emergencies only. Any ideas please?

Phone your vet and see what they say, they will be the best judge as to whether it is an emergency.
Agree - ring them, he's quite an old boy - don't leave it until tomorrow.

He's going to vets tomorrow after my phone call on your advice. Meanwhile he's moving around, eating and barking at anybody he sees passing the house.

He may be 14 but he's still very fit and full of spirit.
Good, and long may he continue to do so corylus.
Let us know how you get on tomorrow please. Hope he's OK.

After the vet's home visit he was taken to the vet's HQ where he was x-rayed for spinal and cerebral damage, the results not optimistic so I had to opt for having him put to sleep and so not prolong his suffering.

He was a lovely sparky little dog, a real pleasure to own, we are absolutely wrecked tonight, but we have another dog and 2 cats to keep us going.
oh my,,,,,,,, im sorry.
I know exactly how you all feel. It's a terrible thing when you have to decide it's time for them to go but it's a last act of love for your pet which has loved you all its life. You did the right thing.
Oh corylus, I'm so sorry. Poor boy. X
So sorry, but glad you did the right thing. I hear so many people say they won't take them to the vets in case they say they have to be put down, but its the final act of love you can do for them after all they have given you. Bet he's left you with some wonderful memories.

Thanks everybody for your kind words, I know that it was the best thing to do for him but it was hard. He's the third dog we've had, the other two just died naturally at home, we still have another dog to keep us going!!

And we've had loads of cats as well, (2 at present) but when they die it's never easy is it?

Thanks again. I won't nominate a best answer for this sad posting but I'm sure that you all know how I feel.
I was following your post corylus and am saddened at the outcome.

Best wishes to your family - those with two legs and, also, those with four legs.

x
Oh corylus, I'm so very sorry to hear your sad news. I used to have a border terrier and had to have her put down when she was ten. She had cancer and the prognosis was dire. It was the best thing to do, I KNOW, but it was the hardest decision I ever had to make. My sympathies to you and your family. I hope you continue to get joy and happiness from your other animals. I'm sure you will. xx
