If the laptop is one that came with Windows 95 pre-installed it is VERY unlikely to be powerful enough to run Windows XP.
XP is not just a newer version of 95, it is a totally different sort of operating system and needs a much more powerful PC.
For example you would need about 256Mb of real memory to use XP, and if the laptop is fairly old I doubt if it will have that much memory.
