Scart cables 2: Revenge of the Scart

My televison passed away recently and the one ive jus bought (its an oldie) doesnt have the three coloured )red, yellow and white) scart sockets on it. Now as im a technophobe im totally baffled, how can I play my ps2 on my new tv, is there a conversion cable? what do I ask for in the shop? cheers

We've got a 21" Panasonic with a scart lead and that only cost �25

Those 3 coloured sockets are not scart sockets. A scart socket is a large almost rectangular (it has a triangular bit sticking out of one end) multiway connector with 20 pins. The red and white sockets you refer to are audio in (left and right channels), and the yellow one is composite video in. If your new telly has scart connectors (as described above) you can get an adaptor from just about any radio/tv shop which consists of a scart plug with your 3 av sockets on the back. It should cost less than a tenner.

If you really don't have a scart socket, then spacechimp's suggestion is your only option, but not only will it be relatively expensive, it will also be much worse quality than you are used to, die to the fact that the signal is converted to RF, fed to your aerial socket and then decoded back to sound and picture.

I think the quality's reasonable. The ones in freeview boxes perform perfectly acceptably.

I've just searched the Maplin catalogue and can't find a suitable scart to phone adaptor in it, but just so you know what a scart connector looks like, here's one:

Now, if yoir telly has a socket that will accept that, you can get a plug that looks like that, but has three coloured phone sockets on the back. But you need to be careful, they come in two flavours: Input and Output, and you need the input type.

�30 can get them cheaper than that, I had the same problem and overcome it for under a tenner at a local shop. But the same bit of kit is in Argos for �9.99.

If you only need the Scart to phono+AV block I saw them in ASDA for �4.99.
