The Food Recycle Box

Only 2 weeks into the new recycling collections and the food one is making me totally heave. I use the liners but even so the squidgy bag that I know holds tea-bags, leftover meat and fish, bread, cold veg and remnants of cat food all mixed up together is revolting. I can hardly bear to touch it. Are you all coping like good environmental warriors?

Although I'm a very keen recycler, I absolutely refuse to use the food caddy - disgusting idea. All fruit and veg peelings, eggshells, teabags etc go on the compost heap so the only food "waste" we have is fish and chicken bones.

I missed the first week but I am doing it now. The small caddy lives outside the back door because I have no where in the kitchen for it to live. The squishy bags are a bit disconcerting at first I was convinced they'd break but I've used a couple so far and they seem ok. The only thing is if you fil the small caddy and tie up the bag, the contents expand on the way to the (ever so slightly) bigger brown bin and then it won't fit without a fight. Now I will only half fill the little one before emptying but obviously will use more bags which doesn't seem very 'green'. At least I got my brown bin back when they emptied it unlike the 100 odd whose food waste bin got chucked into the refuse lorry in the first week and ended up being taken to landfill never to be seen again.

I have one but I don't use it, any food waste I have goes straight into our green wheelie bin.

Produce less waste...Install a compost bin if you have a garden. Feed the birds. It isn't difficult.

Wot food/other waste? Left overs are chucked in the field for wildlife. Combustibles in fireplace to keep me warm. Bottles & tins to works bin as binmen never collect from home.

I use the bins for horse feed ;)

We have a fantastic food recycling system!

We call them hounds and chickens :-(

Roo stands over leftovers while hens eat, dogs dont get a chance from him. Me, family & friends eat the eggs, all still living ;)

We've had the small caddies for some time now. We get issued with free biogradeable liners which are put into the garden waste bin when full (or half full). Never had problems with smell.

I really don't see what the problem is. We have a small catproof pedal bin in the kitchen lined with a disposable liner, I empty it twice a week, tying it up and putting it in the green bin outside. It's collected weekly. It doesn't smell (a bit of dustbin powder can help), and once it's tied up, I don't have to look at it again. What's the problem?

If we didn't buy and prepare too much food in the first place the problem would go away.

I tell MOH this all the time but she takes no notice. We don't have food recycling yet. It gets wrapped in newspaper and goes in the bin.

The problem is boxie is that you do have to look at it until it's tied up and even when it is it feels disgusting. I'm clearly not alone in this view but we are all different.

Erm - I can't say I look at it, I just open the lid and chuck it in. If it looks a bit dodgy or smells a bit, I tie it up and start another bag. We've had it for a couple of years now - I'd far rather do that than chuck non-compostable food scraps into a carrier bag and put it in the refuse bin.
