tit in a trance

anyone else heard of this phrase ?heard it said many times by my mum and dad when i was younger,its generally used as a derogatry (?)term for someone whos being a bit slow or preoccupied ,i think. 'your like a bleedin tit in a trance'they might have said!!

The breast-word you use has been a term of abuse - meaning a stupid or ineffectual person - since the 1940s. 'In a trance' just strengthens the abuse, meaning that the person is not even in control of his own mind or has been hypnotised/brainwashed into being a virtual zombie. A pretty devastating combination!

why is it i got 4 replies in my e-mail yet when i come to have a look at them theres only one answer here? thanks anyway quizmonster .i was thinking that maybe the tit might the bird variety that might occasionally enter a trancelike state,what do you think?

At one time, 'tit' used to refer to anything small, especially a girl...along the same lines as the phrase: 'a chit of a girl'. Only very rarely, however, was it ever applied to a boy or young man. In use, this word was generally dismissive, as in:'Do you imagine I'd take advice from a tit/chit of a girl?' There might, therefore, be some thin connection here with the abusive form of the word.

I think it much more likely, though, that it is a reference to a part of the anatomy, as I suggested earlier. Lower body-part names - both male and female - are also frequently used to mean a stupid person.

I can see no conceivable connection with the bird of the same name. Cheers

My Dad used to tell me I wondered around like a fart in a trance, suppose it's different wherever ya come from.

I also remember 'tit in a trance' & 'like a fart in a colander'. Never heard of a 'fart in a trance', but it really made me laugh though!
