help with a IP query please

Yesterday morning I went to check my emails and was met with a warning that my IP address had been duplicated, I went into it to make sure and all seemed ok with it being ticked in WEP, I then did a full virus scan, again, all was well, I had to email someone (a company)
I received an answer from them today and in it, was my email address..fine, and my IP address, but it wasn't mine at all,
any help on this would be greatly appreciated

If you have a router to get to the internet it will be sharing your real ip address amoungst any that are on your home network.

Most people will see 192.168.1.something when they look at their machine's ip address.

No there's simply not enough IP addresses for every computer so routers are configured to do this.

Without getting too complicated there is a new version (IP V6) which gets rid of this problem but it has poor take up so far

You should not be using WEP it is the most hackable format use WPA2 Personal which is the most secure . IPV6 is not available to ordinary consumers yet but it is true that IPV4 addresses are running out but not for some time yet. I would run Name Bench and see if your DNS server is correct and the fastset available to you . Download Name Bench at www.namebench.com it will take a little while to do its job but the end results will benefit you with a faster internet connection.Make sure you configure your routers firewall as well when you log on to it.
