I have a 13 week old cocker spaniel puppy, fed on James well beloved Turkey & Rice dried puppy mix, however she keeps getting running poo's and seems to have several manic hyperactive spells in the day, with almost endless energy (maybe that's normal, I am new to puppies!) she gets walks, played with and enjoys her garden. Any advice, especially on food, welcome .
at 13 weeks the manic behaviour is normal, especially in a cocker. The runs are not normal. Is the vet happy with her? Has she been wormed? If he is then Tilly's advice to try home cooking and a different protein/starch mix is a good one. There's no need to cook it yourself, although its good if you can do it. Personally I would go for a fish and potato combination.
My first ever puppy had a really bad tummy and I was advised by the vet to feed him boiled rice and chicken or fish. I used to fret about bones in the fish so I tended to buy big trays of chicken thighs and cook a one at a time. He soon improved and I gradually introduced dried dog puppy food. It was Eukanuba but I wouldn't recommend that now, as they have changed the formula.
Thank you all, I am doing boiled rice and chicken and the poo is getting more solid, so I will carry on for the rest of today and reintroduce James well beloved gradually. Am wondering if I should find another good quality dried puppy food, I don't mind paying for top quality, she is young and her health is important to us. However, there seem so many makes of food it's hard to know where to start? Will visit vet, if bad tummy returns this week.
If the runnies are getting sorted so quickly I suggest not reintroducing the food but trying something else, I would suggest finding something that tells you everything that's in it and doesn't say things like "meat and meat by products"
Another one the breeder recommended for our Cavalier, was to boil rice and break an egg in, so the rice cooks it. That also works, she said to make sure no blood was present first.
I have fed Eukanuba for puppies and adults for over twenty years. I also occasionally feed raw tripe or chicken wings, and although I am not a 'raw disciple' it is known to help dogs with sensitive tummies. Plenty of information online if your google BARF. Try giving her a raw chicken wing to see how she gets on with it, and take it from there.
