When I press. Chrome on my Sonny Xperia L I get the following message
Unforunatetly, Google text to speech engine has stopped.
Also when I try to search for anything although all particular
Websites appear when I click on the appropiate one it just returns me to a blank search page.
Can anyone help me out please?

Based upon what I've found from Googling (because I've certainly got no expertise here!) . . .

Go to your list of install apps. Uninstall Google Text to Speech. Then go to the Google Apps Store and reinstall it.
