I'm going backpacking for 3 months this year, travelling through australia, hong kong, china, mongolia and russia. Is it better to buy a global sim card or purchase separate local sim cards in each country? or does it depend on how long i spend in each place?

Hi Katreeen

I'm not an expert in this field, but I do have a friend who is constantly travelling and I know she gets a new phone more or less in each country. She has a global phone which is billed here but she finds the charges are so much that its cheaper to get a 'pay as you go' type phone in each country.

I guess it would depend on how long you are planning to stop in each country though as if its only a couple of nights/weeks it may not be worth it. I'm sure I've seen mobile hiring at foreign airports, I don't know what the costs are of this though.

Happy travelling!
