17 down: Discover money in short (6) _ATHOM . Is it fathom (discover) ? but 'money in short' ?
I've completed the grid but having difficulty locating the family members - could some kind person give me a hint.

FAT = money (slang); HOM[E] = 'in' short.

If you have the family names and the other unclued entries, it should not be difficult to find the family members doing exactly what they are famous for.
