Hi, my partner and I would like to get a kitten, however we already have a female cat who does not like other cats. She is a lovely cat and very affectionate and has a very good temper. More specifically we would like to know whether there is any difference introducing a male or female kitten into the household.

Thanks in advance.

If you cat doesn't like other cats I do think it would be rather cruel and insensitive to introduce another one into the household just because you would like a kitten. The kitten will be frisky & disruptive and no doubt you will give it lots of attention. Your cat will feel very upset and put out at losing her prime position in the house and may possibly move out and find somewhere else to live. If she's already a friendly cat with a loving disposition, I would be contented with a pet you've already got and not spoil the domestic equilibrium. You could change her nature & personality by introducing another animal and it's hardly fair on her..

If you insist on getting another cat, check out

http://www.catsinternational.org/articles/index.html and read the articles on getting a cat. This may help you decide which kind and how to do it, and what to expect.

I have tried both and it made no difference.

However, if you already know that your cat does not like other cats, why do you insist on bringing another cat into the house?
