where have my Mac files gone?

I saved some Word files produced on Mac onto my memory stick, they have saved as ._filename (the Mac had crashed a couple of times). Now I can't find them anywhere - the help menu said:

Files whose filenames begin with a period (for example, ".filename") are hidden in Mac OS X. However, if you view Macintosh disks on a Windows computer, you can see these hidden files.

When I put memory stick in PC I can see the files but I cannot open them. They still do not appear when I put memory stick in PC.

Any help would be much appreciated!

plug it into the windows pc and rename the files so they haven't got a . at the beginning and then plug it back into the mac.

Thanks Neil, that was really helpful. Another problem I have is documents that I can access both on PC and Mac are fine, however, some graphics appear as a black box on the Mac - other graphics within the same document and all other formatting is ok - everything appears ok on the PC

neil's answer is a load of rubbish. It sounds like something from 1993.

I'd do as Chuck says, and if the files are still ok after the crashes, all should be well. You could do it straight on the mac too, but it would involve the terminal application, so is a little more tricky.

RE word document: neil may be right about that. When you insert an image into a word document, there is a tick box you can use to either embed the image into the document, or just link to it. You want to make sure you've embedded the image.
