Slow Computer

My computer is very slow It takes ages to get onto a site and quite often it freezes altogether and I have to turn it off. Ive got bt infinity which I thought was supposed to be quick but I couldn't even get signed into my own account today.Please has any body got any suggestions as I am not very good at anything technical It's bad enough that I have to find something to replace my MSE as it is not going to be supported any more by microsoft.But I have found a thread on AB from Thursday evening to help with this. All I need now is a bit of confidence Many Thanks

clear all your junck out
download if ya can cc cleaner its free
when its loaded up click on run cleaner bottom right wait for it to finish then defrag your hard drive ,that should make bit run faster
other will tell you whats best anti virus prog to get and malware prog

There are some folk who will tell you to use CCleaner and others like myself who advise against it.

Defraging a Hard Drive is pointless because within a few days it will be back to where it was originally.

I am wondering if there is something wrong with your Broadband connection. Have you used the BT Speedtester to see what speeds you are getting.

Incidentally, I am assuming that you are running on Windows XP. If this is the case then Do Not panic because MSE will support your system until July 2015. After that there will still be available other free Anti Virus programmes.

cc cleaner is a well respected prog this and defragging will speed up the comp
i presume its the comp that is slow not the broadband (two separate problems)

Indeed. 'er indoors was moaning about the broadband speed even though I had upgraded from 2meg to 8meg (the fastest available on this manor) as soon as the local exchange was upgraded. Youtube was constantly freezing up when she was trying to watch it. As soon as she got a new computer with a faster processor and more memory the problem was solved. Maybe her old computer could have been upgraded but I don't have the necessary expertise for that and the new one was actually reconditioned so didn't cost the earth.

You haven't said what OS and browser you are using. I would download and run Malware Bytes to see if you are infected. I would manually remove MSE by using the method from the Microsoft web site. I would download AVAST Free Antivirus the latest one and install it. The new version comes with tools one of which can detect rogue browser add ins and remove them. Your browser could be high jacked.

I still say avoid CCleaner. If used carelessly, it can upset a Computer's Registry beyond repair. Furthermore I stand by what I said about it being unnecessary to Defragment.

use cc cleaner to get rid of junc files, i did not say anything about checking registry with cc cleaner which is not done by "run cleaner"

further more i run cleaner and check registry every two weeks for many years not once has it caused any problems

Sorry ivor....I fail to appreciate any reason for the Registry to be continually checked as you are doing. All the years I have had computers, I have never had any reason to 'mess about' with the Registry. CCleaner might be safe in your hands but it's Not everyone who can be let loose with a dangerous weapon. (Myself included,)

ill keep on with it hans ,but like all responsible comp users everything is backed up twice on two different formats
plus a clone disc copy using AOMIE backup prog
just in case anything should go a miss with "anything" not relating to cc cleaner

@ivor4781 and @Senyoreeta.....I stick with what I have said about Registry Cleaners being unnecessary and potentially dangerous. In support of my case you might be interested to know of what VHG has said on the matter. (VHG is a gold badged Nerd in AB ) :-

@trish1234567.... I would say that anything over 5 is quite respectable; bearing in mind that our Coalition Government is aiming for all broadband users in the UK to have a minimum of 2Mbps by 2015.
