Does anyone else get fed up with people who are whingeing about something that happened, and they try to strengthen their point by moaning about something that DIDN'T happen?

There was a guy on telly earlier, complaining that the state of the road had made him fall off his bike.

He'd hurt his arm. So, he said ...

"What if I'd fallen on my head?" (but he hadn't) (and he should've been wearing a skid lid)

And you get things like ...

"What if it had been a child?" (it wasn't)

"What if it had fallen on someone?" (it didn't)

"What if it had been plugged in?" (it wasn't)

"I could have been killed?" (you weren't)

Etc, etc ...

Isn't there enough to whinge about with things that happen, without also whingeing about things that didn't happen?

My favourite one is 'you could have someones eye out with that' I have NEVER heard of anyone having had their eye put out with anything.

I think it's selfish - it's never a real concern about the "what if," it's trying to claim some sort of spurious equivalence to it for the really earth shatteringly terrible thing that's just happened to the What Iffer concerned..

..like bumping into something, or tripping up
If it underlines the lack of responsibility shown and how the individual concerned was merely lucky, then I see nothing wrong with it. Folk tend to be judged on the actual consequences when they ought to answer for their behaviour, their action or inaction.
Stewey, the dog didn't feel a thing!

Imagine a scenario where a child has gone missing for five minutes and is then found. What Mother/Father is not going to run through the whole gamut of 'What ifs' when their child is safely back?

It's not whingeing, it's what you do.
In line with the OP, but it could of, Tilly:)
You have lost me there, stewey.
On a suggestion from a girlfriend that I would get double the pleasure from 'making me two'.........

I didn't.

I'm stoopid.

Now she's talking chastity...
