A big problem with finding a safety gate for the bottom of staircase, can not use normal extendible gates because of the shape of banister and rail at the bottom of staircase.

You may need to attach a length of timber to the stair post to get a standard safety gate width across the stair tread.

We made one out of an old wooden playpen, or you could use a side from an old cot.

I don't know of a wooden one but there are gates that are made of solid fabric, not plastic with holes. There are many web sites that let you look at gates on line.
