Soundproofing floorboards
2 Answers
I need to soundproof under my floorboards as I can hear the man in the flat below me yawning! It's a victorian flat and I'm going to strip the floorboards so the only option to reduce noise is to put something under the boards, above his ceiling. I've been told acoustic mineral wool/quilt can be laid between the rafters. Does anyone know if this works, and how difficult a job it is? I'm intending on doing it myself - I'm a fairly handy female!

This will not stop all the noise because the joists will meet the floorboards.
You will have to be sure that the ceiling can support the weight.
Good quality underlay and thick carpeting will also help.
In my house, however, the noise seems to travel up through the cavity walls.
Cork of course is excellent soundproofing. Cork tiles are cheap, warm but ugly. It could be worth trying this with additional flooring covering on top.
Good luck with it.
