Troublesome Freezer

My freezer is on the blink, the lights are on, the door is closed but the thing isn't freezing! The food inside is starting to thaw, and the red warning light is on but that is nothing new as it is always on and has worked fine until now. Does anyone out there have any idea what might be going on, or shall I cut my losses and replace it? Bearing in mind it must be around 20 years old and owes me nothing.

I would advise you to bite the bullet, kiss the old one goodbye and welcome the new one with open arms!! But seriously, at that age I would have thought that spares would be like hens teeth and the cost of repairs would probably go quite a way to the cost of a replacement.

My memory isn't what it was, in fact it never was, but I recall some freezers had drainage holes or some sort of holes at the back which can get blocked and interfere with it working. Ensure that isn't the case here.

Otherwise it could be a thermostat failure ?

Thanks for the advice, have looked into a replacement, but will check out the back of the freezer before we go shopping! I hate shopping!

How is the door seal looking? any splits/gaps, does the magnet still hold the door closed firmly? Door seals are common on many freezers and one should be available and pretty simple to fit.

as mentioned already, we have a drainage hole at the back which seems to cure the problem when it is unblocked.
