Hello guys... actually my father age 67, is hypertensive patient he was using amlodipine 5mg daily from last 2,3 years but now his blood pressure was not well controlled, dr increased the dose to 10mg, but he is now experiencing the side effects of amlodipine, that is, swelling in feet and burning sensation... what advice would you give? I think if we decrease amlodipine to 5mg and add losartan 50mg for hypertension??
Please give suggestions, as it is not possible for him to visit GP soon, so any advice???

Thank you all in advance

I think only a doctor who knows your fathers medical history should give advice.
I agree with Anne.

But I would ask you from where you think you could obtain the additional losartan if not through a doctor's prescription?

I cannot understand what circumstances would prevent him from seeing his GP soon if he is unwell or suffering considerable discomfort.

Because he is here on vaccations, and does not have a GP, he brough his losartan from back home.
Get Father registered as an emergency patient at your practice. He can then make an appointment, see a G.P. and they can then have his notes faxed from his practice wherever that is.
Your suggestion is a good one, to add losartan to the amlidopone.

A better suggestion in my opinion would be to add a betablocker such as Bisoprolol to the losartan.
To "add" tablets wily-nilly is not a good idea and in any case beta-blockers are not the treatment many Doctors now use. They now prefer an ace-inhibitor such as Perindopril to work in conjunction with a calcium channel blocker such as Amlodipine.Still think my suggestion of emergency registration is the right one.
grumpy.......this poster is finding out material for a project or question.....it is not a bona fida case.

I agree with all you say, but betablockers are still playing an important role on the management of hypertension.
well if the op is doing a project, it might have been courteous of the op to state that in their question :(
anne...in my experience of people who do, they get " short shrift" from ABers.
no, sqad, still no way to use the site. sorry
They probably get short shrift because it is expected students do their own homework. Asking for expert advice is a bit too near getting the answer from someone else and a little too far from knowing the taught subject and doing one's own research to fill in any gaps. Knowledge so given, even if good advice, is less likely to stick in the mind. It's accepted, regurgitated for the tutor/course then forgotten, including the reasons why it is good advice. I'm sure an argument could be made that asking folk is research but that seems more than the thin end of the wedge. This has been a little deceitful.

Guys I don't know what is the issue about homework or research... If I was to ask help on project or homework I would have rather said it, and even if it was I dont see any harm in taking advice or help.
I am a pharmacist by profession, my father was experiencing this side effect which I thought might be due to amlodipine so I thought it'd be better to ask u people to have an idea if my suggestion is right or not.

As with beta blocker option, its not a good one also considering his age.
I've just been taken of this drug after 3 years due to swollen feet and ankles. I was on 10mg. I haven't replaced it with anything else and my blood pressure is manageable on my other 2 medications:- Perindopril 8mg
and Atenolol 50g.
