Does anyone know where I can look up births,deaths and marriage records myself rather than pay somewhere like 'Ancestory. ' to do it.?

The General Register Office sells its data to companies such as Ancestry.co.uk, so they're not going to let you search their records directly.

However there's a volunteer-led project which can provide some useful information:

You can also use the familysearch.org website. it's the Mormon church site and is useful for parish records and records from before 1837, ie pre dating compulsory registration. There are also a lot of county sites, look for Parish Clerks.

your local library, maybe; many have subscriptions to sites like Ancestry whcih users can access for free.

I think Ancestry is worth the money. It can't have been cheap to buy the data from the GRO and then have it all transcribed.

Local libraries and archives provide free access to the ancestry sites from their pc's, and you get all the other local studies goodies too.
