When it comes to resolving thorny issues like this.
There must be many fairly heavy vehicles in and out of their yard on a daily basis. If the laptop and phone fell under one of them and were crushed beyond use then all the chat would be for naught.
Mind your step there officer.

There is still plenty of time for it to get 'lost'
should have put them in the same draw as all the missing files. ;-)
The photos are not indecent so he perfectly entitled to have them. He has been convicted of the assault and is in prison.

The police could ask for permission from him to delete the photos, but they are his personal possession, so he does not have to agree to that.
Why not perpetually re-arrest him the second they're handed over?
I'm sure he'd soon get sick of it.
Surely he cannot have them for the 9 years, well four in reality I suppose whilst in the slammer?

There is something morally wrong here. Needs addressing.

Is the view that it is lawful to view pornography that someone else has made - such as in passing a phone around NOT downloading we know that is unlawful. Otherwise they would be complicit in another crime.
thank you gromit - missed that completely
If the pictures are not his intellectual property then he has no right to keep them. If he took the photographs of the girl on private property without permission then he has o right to keep them.
If he took the photographs, then they are his property. He got close to this girl to indecently assault her, so it is fair to assume they were taken with permission or she sent him photos. It is highly probable he was a family friend or relative. None of the photos are sexual and were not part of his prosecution.
Police should encrypt all the files and 'loose' the key before retuning the computer to him.

A copper with a sense of humour (if such exists) should replace any questionable photos with the villains's police mugshot.
Perhaps the laptop could accidentally 'fall down the stairs' while in custody.
