Just wondering how you can tell if your car needs a new clutch. A few months ago i got stuck in traffic and by the time i got home there was a horrible burning smell. Called out green flag as not sure what it was , he said it was the clutch, but on testing it on an incline he said it was ok. just lately iv'e noticed the same smell but not as strong, does this mean that clutch needs replacing ?
You will find when the Clutch needs replacing when the clutch starts to slip, the engine will increase it's rev's, if going up hill, the car will struggle to get up, problems getting it in gear.
I should have been clearer twr. I meant to ask does she knock it out of gear when stationary in traffic. I been behind no end of drivers who hold their car on the clutch when stood, rather than putting it in neutral & applying the handbrake
When out driving, get the car to about 35mph in top gear and put your foot hard down on the accelerator. If the RPM goes up without the speed increasing by very much your clutch is on its way out. Try the same thing in 4th at ~35mph for a double check.
Another reliable test is with car stopped put handbrake fully on and put it into 2nd gear slowly let clutch pedal up, should stall the car but if not then the clutch is slipping badly..
