Last night my pvr started playing up and when I reached for the remote control, which was on the tv unit shelf, it was rather hot, On taking out the batteries I discovered one of them was too hot to handle. I have had his issue previoulsy with a small torch, but can anyone explain why this should happen and indeed what exactly is happening?

It sounds like there is a short somewhere. Have you recently replaced these batteries? Some of the new ones have the top of the casing sticking up beside the top (positive pole) and some remotes are not made to take them, causing a short. If it still happens with new batteries it could also be a short in the circuit itself, in which case the remote should be repaired before the components burn out completely.
Some remotes get dust inside them. When that becomes moist through people holding the remote when watching the dust may short.

Some thoughts to consider.
The battery shorted out and passed a large current resulting in it getting hot. Probably internal failure if just one battery from a group is affected. This is a very serious matter, you should replace it immediately and write to the manufacturer expressing your outrage at their faulty goods.
Thanks for the answers. I had the same problem few weeks ago.
