Can't Fathom This Problem

My great uncle many of many generations Richard Patston b1826 in Shoreditch is on the 1851 census with his wife Caroline b1823 in Wapping, with 3 children Alfred 10yrs, Richard 2yrs & Charles 7mnths, the oldest child probably not Richards.
Now it gets a starts getting a puzzle as records show in 1854 he marries a Caroline Buglar in Bethnal Green 3yrs after above census. Yet in 1861 (census) he is married to a Sarah and his sons Richard is rightly now 12 and Charles 10. Once again records show he married Sarah Reeveley in 1863 two yrs after previous census. There is no record of Carolines' death, although in 1914 a Caroline Patston is shown, equally a Caroline Buglar is down as dying in 1862. Any facts or theories very welcome please

Caroline Patston nee Bulgar must have died between 1851 and 1863 (Probably before 1856 when Henry was born) because the marriage cert.for Richard and Sarah gives his marital status as Widower.
Caroline Bulgar d: 1862 would have been named Caroline Patston if the same person.
Caroline,the mother of Richards children would not have disappeared from the radar until 1914 if she was not dead.
