This man is just, or was just, the manager of a football team. By all accounts he is going with a pay-off package of a few £million in his pocket. So can we stop talking about him now please ?

Manchester United are the richest football team in the world, and are a global brand listed on several national stock exchanges. Since success on the pitch generates a bigger share of television rights (through participation in the more lucrative competitions), the manager of the team has an important role to play in securing revenue for the company.
In being at the helm when the brand missed out in the champions league next season, the manager has lost the brand millions.
To adopt an old cliche, it's not just a game, it's actually much more important than that - particularly for the bean counters who now rule the sport.

ken, in terms of earnings, that's true.
in terms of worth, Man U are still up there, by virtue of their stock exchange listings and other fiscal connections with their worth as an international brand

"In being at the helm when the brand missed out in the champions league next season, the manager has lost the brand millions."
He has not "lost" the brand millions. No club has the absolute right to Champions' League qualification. Therefore, if they're counting on that cash in their budget each year, they're guilty of some fairly questionable accounting. What's happened here is that he hasn't 'won' them that added bonus.
And that's all.
Also, they're not "the richest football team in the world". How much is the club leveraged? Some half a billion?
