Setting up BT Wireless Broadband

Wonder if any IT buffs can help me out with this...

Just had a BT line installed downstairs (a re-connection of an old line) but I want to use my PC upstairs and want to connect to broadband. If I subscribe to BT wireless, would I plug the main console bit into the socket downstairs and then I'd be able to get broadband from my PC upstairs? Or do I need a really, really long extension cable? :oD

Plug the gizmo in downstairs, use it wirelessly upstairs. Simple as that.

you do need to put a splitter into the bt line, this should come with the modem/router you then plug the phone into one point & your modem/router into the other

STUPID INTERNET.....didn't mean to post IF and nothing else!

IF you move your PC upstairs, you will connect wirelessly so won't need a really, really long extension cable. I don't know if BT will supply a router but this is how my wireless connection is set up in very easy to understand language.

I already have Tiscali broadband and recently bought a wireless enabled laptop so I wanted to move my desktop PC upstairs (phone socket downstairs) and use both PC and laptop on one internet connection.

I bought a wireless router which came with a dongle. I have a splitter plugged into the phone socket and into this were two sockets, one for the phone and one for the broadband modem. I removed my broadband modem and plugged the router into the socket (it has an integrated modem). I plugged the dongle into my desktop PC via a USB cable. I then used the CD that came with the router to set up the software on both laptop and PC.

Two minutes later and both devices had detected the wireless router and the connection was set up no problem (well, with help from the lovely peeps on this site).

I am still having problems trying to share files between the two devices without having to email from one to the other so any help on this would be most appreciated....

Cheers all - It seemed a bit too easy to be true - but a whole lot easier than a stupidly long extension cord, or having another socket fitted upstairs.

Actually, I found wiring up an extension upstairs to be the easiest option.
You just buy a box and some cable and follow the instructions.

The hard bit is convincing the wife it's a great idea to lift up the carpet to chuck the wires under!
