Why are the letters on keyboards so small?

Most letters on keyboards only take up a quarter of each key - why aren't they any bigger?

Additionally, notice that some of the keys (upper row) have an upper case and lower case identification. Time was, when typewriters actually existed (especially the electric ones), that almost all keys had upper and lower case figures. Not needed now, I guess, so only the one is used...

Schools can buy keyboards with larger letters.

Just a guess, but maybe the symbol is off centre to reduce wear, and keep the symbols visable whilst your fingers are resting on the keys.
