A friend pointed me towards a free add-on called Privacy Badger:

https://www.eff.org/privacybadger

I've just installed it and it's great for those of you who worry about some of the cookies you end up with when visiting websites. It colour-codes and lists them (there's a little dropdown in the toolbar), automatically blocking the unsavoury ones. It shows AB loading 7 cookies on my system, all of them a big thumbs-up green, perfectly safe.

Might be worth looking at for those annoyed by that sort of thing.

Bit about it here. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/05/02/eff_privacy_badger/
Ghostery does much the same for Firefox https://www.ghostery.com/en/ , and there is also Self-Destructing Cookies https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/self-destructing-cookies/ which ensures that all cookies for sites which aren't on your whitelist get deleted as soon as you leave that site. Firefox also has a browser setting as to whether 3rd party cookies should be accepted at all (I have it set to 'never').
(Have just checked and Ghostery can be added to Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari)
