I read it for GCSE English but i dont know the name. The story goes along the same lines as 28 Days Later.

Basically it starts with a young boy who lives with his grandparents. An illness comes to country after lenghty reports abroad of it spreading. Then one day his teacher becomes ill, then everyone else gets ill. He eventually drives a car or walks to London, where he lives in this really plush house - could of been no.10 downing street. After a while he gets lonely, goes searching for food finds a sign at a supermarket regarding someone who is alive. He eventually finds this person, they have given up though and hung themselves.

Then not long after this he meets a girl and a lad, who are staying together. In the end the lad dies or disappears, I cannot remember exactly and the young boy and girl get a house together and grow veg and start the human race again. What is the book? I enjoyed it so much at school but keep getting it mixed up with 'Day of the Triffids'.

Sounds like "Z for Zachariah" by Robert C O Brien. Everybody read that at school.
Sounds like Empty World, by John Christopher, who also authored the 'Tripods' books. More here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140373888/026-3474178-0899613
I don't think it's Z for Zachariah, that was about a girl on a farm on her own after a nuclear holocaust.
definately sounds like plague 99 by jean ure. i thought so anyway when i saw the film.
everybody except you it seems feebal, considering z for zacharia is about a nuclear holocaust, not an illness, its main person was a girl, and it was set in america!
Oh yeah....
