Why Did He Keep Denying That I Don't Like Him Even Though He Just Said I'm Off His "list"?

So my friend was talking to someone I like now but didn't like before and he said something about me not being on his "list". After that my friend kept saying to him that I do not like him. He kept denying it. (This was before I told her I like him.) He is shy sometimes and just don't know what this means, whether if he does like me but he just doesn't want my friend to know or if he just doesn't like me. We've had a lot of times when he shows interest in me, but this just burns all of it. I'm just confused right now. Help??????
