I enjoyed it,but found the hurried final 15 mins confusing. Why was John Sims wife murdered?

Because the young man who was sent to steal the tapes was seen by her son, as he ran downstairs, the boy called his mother then fell hitting his head. His mother came into the hallway and saw the burglar, he panicked and killed her.
