Mauritius is a beautiful (and large) island with many sights, historical places of interest, culture etc, not too mention some of the worlds best beaches, hotels, dive sites and water based activities. However, for the best in 'get away from it all' locations, the Maldives is almost impossible to beat.
The only drawback could potentially be boredom. Most islands you can walk round in less than 15 mins, so you need to love sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and ....seafood. Utter peace and relaxation, and despite El Nino and the Tsunami, the diving is extraordinary. Good weather generally all year round, though the sea can get a little cloudy in the off season.
The Maldives, definitely.
I was there on the island resort of Kurumba for ten days at the end of last September - it is fantastic. However, as the previous post says, there is very little to do if you don't like sunbathing. You can go to the main island, Male, and have a walk about and go the renowned fish market. I'm a diver too, and that is amazing, although you can snorkel as well.
Do it!
