It would work assuming there was a majority of these things on the road - not sure I would trust my life with it when there's still human drivers out there.
Additionally they will have to write crash programs. This means that when a driverless car has calculated that it is going to be involved in a crash - it's just unavoidable - and it has the choice of crashing into an old car with a safety rating of 2/5 with only one person in it, and another mewer car with a safety rating of 4/5 and a whole family in it - which does the car choose?

Don't programme it to choose. Program it to avoid, and when it doesn't, it hits whatever it hits according to the best the avoid programme managed. In any case if it read the developing situation it would know not to get in that position. The only accidents would be when something else goes into it faster than can be avoided.
