He should ask the local council for details of emergency housing
that's a lot of arrears.
maybe he should live with his parents.
Have they taken this to court yet? What's the monthly rent and how long is the tenancy?
Even if she had the money to pay her son's debts it wouldn't be a good thing to do so. If he ran up debts like that once and saw someone had come to the rescue he's liable to do it again.
How did he manage to get in so much arrears?
Might only be a month or two though, a sudden change in work could do that easily.

Apparently her gave the money to his partner to pay the rent, and he new nothing until a few days ago. They have two children aged 9 and 2.
If he gave his partner money to pay the rent and she has spent it on something else, i'd suggest the arrears are the least of his problems.
Is it just the son who is in arrears then or is the partner also listed on the rent book? Does she still have th emoney? My worry is she may have further debts
midagetrolop he could get some good free ( private ) advice from his local cab
That is probably two or three months in arrears...how much a month is his rent..is it private is it a local council house...f it is the latter,I am sure they will come to an arrangment...my daughter once got into arrears and they took so much a month off her.
As you will know, and as this lady's Son will know, any tenancy agreement or mortgage agreement relies on the occupier of the property paying the required rent/mortgage. That's the deal.

Realistically he could try and negotiate a reduced payment if he's hit a bad patch, or try to sort it out in some other way with
his landlord/landlady.

But realistically, if the landlord applies for repossession for non payment of rent, Yes, sadly, it can lead to eviction. Unfortunately too, although a local council might help with emergency accommodation, they are unlikely to be sympathetic where arrears are concerned, unless it's due to sudden redundancy, loss of a partner who was contributing to the rent,or something similar.

A Court order for eviction will give a date by which the property must be vacated, and if ignored will lead to bailiffs ettc.

I hope he gets sorted out. Having been made redundant 3 times it's gut wrenching when your income is suddenly cut off.

Good luck.
One thing he must do if and when he has the rent sorted is to take sole charge of finances within the relationship. Otherwise you will be repeating this post months down the line.
What a mess. How could you trust a partner like that again!!

I agree with Ken .....take Sole charge of the finances from this point on, and try to negotiate, as previously posted.

The tenancy is in her name apparently, he only found out last week. Anyway her sister has offered to lend her the money! I told my friend and she agreed, I would be offloading her as soon ass possible!
no....they pay up or they will be evicted (eventually - depending on where they are in the process). if they approach the local homelessness department in their council with rent arrears,l they will be found to be intentionally homeless and will not be offered accommodation, even with two children. they will then have to see if social services are willing to help and sometimes they do. they either pay up; find a way to put the arrears right over a period of time; or find somebody willing to put them up until they can afford to rent somewhere else. i would never lend anyone that amount of money.....particularly after they hats!).d p*ssed it up the wall and not paid rent/council tax/essentials. everybody can afford to live in this country due to the benefits system, it is just a matter of whether you are willing to do it within your means (unless you are not supposed to be in this country and have no access to benefits!). i feel sorry for the lad.... he will also have to decide if he wants to live with his partner if she is that deceptive, stupid and put her whole family at risk by spending rent money.
No, Berlin would have suffered the same fate as Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Ooops, wrong thread
