Hi,
I used to pay my tv licence by dd monthly I then struggled one month and had to cancel it. Stupidly I never re-set it and have now been without a licence for a year. I Have tried to get one now but they say I have to pay the full amount which I can't do. I have told them this and that �30 p/m is about max I can pay. The only way I can see me being able to buy one is if I save the �30 p/m then get one but that means another 4 months without a licence. Anyone got a better suggestion?

Just tell them the truth - that you did not have a TV during this time as it had broken, and you have only now been able to afford t putchase a new one. Put this in writing so that if you are fined for having no TV license, you would be able to rebut this in court with evidence that you had tried to pay.

You know those adverts that say they can tell where you are! That's a crock of S**T The so called detector vans don't have the ability to detect homes watching TV. They use the database which details all past and present purchasers of the license. they pick an area, then make random visits on properties on the data base not currently showing a valid license. (When you buy a TV now your details are fed to the licensing authority... unless if you buy one advertsied in a private sale). They can't cross reference your information with that held by other parties, that's a data protection infringement, so the fact you have NTL won't make a difference. The biggest problem is that you have told them you owe them money.
get yourself onto the" tv licence easy payment scheme"-payments can be weekly and can be made at local shops and post offices -im not sure but i think it can also clear any debt you may have incurred
on the bright side there are only another 10 years or so until this beurocratic red tape sham is finally killed

why not order a licence in the name of someone else who lives in your house or a family member at another address, and set up the dd to go to their bank instead, that way they won't associate you with the license and you will be able to do installments.
it is none of their business who pays for your license as long as its paid for your address
I don't see why you can just deny having a tv for that time. They are unlikely to take you to court because they claim, you say you had one for that time.
If you are willing to pay from now on, tell them that is what you are going to do.
I am fairly sure they can't fine you for something that they haven't proved. The burden of proof would be on them , and you wouldn't do to incriminate yourself, would you?
Take the chance, it wouldn't really be in their interest to pursue it as they have no proof.
