Domain Names And Claiming Them Back From 1 To 1

I should know this, sadly I don't. I have a client who needs advice on their website domain name. They signed up with 1 to 1, bought a domain, website etc. Now they want me to build a website for them, and they have just asked me what happens to their business domain? . . . I was stumped! Surely if you registered and paid for the domain (even if it was part of the package) then you own it? I buy my domain names through get dotted and I can either use their web hosting or my own which is Business Catalyst.

I know I should know this, but I really want to make sure.

If they have paid for hosting, why not use it?

Or see if you can change the name servers for the name and thus point it elsewhere.

Thanks Tuvok, they no longer want to use the templates on 1 to 1 and want something built for them. Plus my websites rely on using my host provider to allow the client the use of an admin Dashboard (so they can make edits, upload pics etc).

Are you using a CMS eg. CMS Made Simple etc?

You might be able to install that on their hosting.

Perhaps your host's software is bespoke to then

The sites I look after all have an admin back end.

They are done in CMS Made Simple, Concrete and Plone

may I ask a question on here?(rhetorical question, I suppose)
The guy who set my lap-top and phone up sorted out a domain name(I think) and connected e-mail address. Anyway, they seemed to be routed through a company he owned. A few months ago the e-mail address stopped working and I cant get it sorted. I cant get hold of the bloke either.
Seeing it was my default e-mail address I'd like to get it reactivated. (not really bothered about the website) I'm going to drop it in to a PC repair place soon but wouldn't mind sounding like I know a little bit about it(which I don't)
So, basically, do you know if the e-mail address can be reactivated without having to pay for a domain name? How much do they cost. I think he charged me £185 but that seemed to be through his domain. If I cant, can I make one of my other e-mail addresses the default?

Thanks Tuvok, I will look into that! No at the present I use Business Catalyst Dashboard (bespoKE), but would welcome an alternative, BC prices are a little steep.
Svejk, I had a similar problem (possibly). I had a client who paid for webhosting and email with a local company. Howevershe changed her mind and went with me, I simply changed the DNS and then her email stopped workiing, I remember having to alter the MX records, let me have a think, my two young children are currently trying to take over my computer at the moment.
