I have bought my friend a pay-as-you-go mobile. She wants to keep the number & credit balance from her old one so do we just transfer the SIM card?

Thanks.

Thank you. I hadn't realised that SIM cards come in different sizes.
They don't. The only way your new handset won't accept your new SIM if is it is locked to a specific network i.e Orange or Vodafone...
The phone may be locked to the new phone's network, or A network.
It will need unlocking if it is, to allow you to use most SIM's, including her present one. If her existing SIM is same network as new phone is, it will probably work.

Thank you all. Not sure what make her old phone is until we meet up next week.
There are 2 sizes of SIM card. The older credit card size, and the now used everywhere 1" by 5/8th" size. It is unlikely your friend has the larger size.

If the seller didn't specify a Network when you bought the phone, there must be a reasonable chance it is not presently locked into one. Network operators lock handsets into their network because they subsidise the handset cost, and want to get their money back in chargeable calls. But it is perfectly legal to unlock it.
