Drm?

I ordered a music CD off eBay and when I played it on the computer (Windows) it sounded like a badly tuned (analogue) radio. I ripped some tracks just in case but that was no better. I checked on Linux and still no joy.
I was going to send it back but I thought I would check in the car, where it turned out everything was hunky-dory.
Is this potentially a digital rights management thing? And if so, how can I get round it? I don't have any other CD player and I'd like to be able to listen in the house..
(Or is there a problem with my DVD drive? I've never noticed any issue before)
