I listened to this this morning. Manchester accents, but they sound so strange. Very sweet naive account of their thoughts on where they were evacuated! http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/ww2outbreak/7922.shtml

Dr .... loved listening to that. You don't realise the problems the fire brigade had with water supply!! I have these two books on the Manchester Fire Brigade ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manchester-Fire-Brigade-A-History/dp/0948946296

& .... http://www.amazon.com/Boys-Old-Brigade-Antony-Conway/dp/1873888252
have to stop reading your posts in the first link i thought the picture looked like the old moss side fire station on moss lane east

which got me looking for a photo which ended up me finding some photos that brought back many old memories

on the first row 1st and 3rd picture has a lollipop lady on the corner of claremont road in the sixties mr allen was the lollipop man on that corner and would have a right go at my mum if i did not cross the road there

the old fire station is on row 7 , the brewery is built on that corner
in the first picture that is the old claremont road picture house on the left looking down on the right hand side where the gap is that is maine road where the manchester city social club was built
The Beeb voice over sounds stranger -

air, pronounced ay-ar - as Heath was parodied when he was PM
happy pronounced happeh - as a true rhyme with frappe ( crushed ice )

and the content - within three days they had become latch-keys kids, and one asked if he could go out to play

nowadays - the parents lock their kids out to stop the thieving
and dont give a toss where the children are
