I would also consider are you buying new or second hand, whether the seller is a big company or a small one, that will affect what you can negotiate. Also, it depends on you and how patient you can be.
It really can be a waiting game, do not be afraid to walk out of the showroom after you've given them your details. You will be surprised how many will contact you with a 'revised' offer. Also, try and time your negotiations towards the end of the month, salesmen and dealerships have targets and also like cash in the bank to cover wages.

Hugh, look at the net & check the prices, if you have the cash you hold the ACE CARD, go from dealer to dealer if you have the time & barter, do not take out the "so called extra warrantee" they are ***, go for everything you can, & I mean everything, they want to sell, you have the money, you can't get the deal, walk away "that simple"
I'm surprised that nobody above has stated the obvious...it very much depends on the make of car. If you are talking "new car", have a look at the What Car? Target Prices and you'll get a good idea.

Dealers make a lot of commission if you take finance. They like selling cars on hp. Discount for cash is not really a discount as the price will be set higher to give them room to negotiate. I bought a one year old car at one of the car supermarkets but they would not budge on price but I was happy with the price. At the time my local Toyota dealer was offering brand new demo cars with delivery mileage for 8 grand under list.
