the presence of the gondola permits those wholly un-prepared for mountains access to a viewpoint 4000ft up.

the gondola company could perhaps insist that riders are not permitted off their premises unless properly equipped.

At that height yes you would find snow mikey. I've been glacier skiing in the Alps in June ...... many years ago I'm sorry to say.

I have skied on the Klein Matterhorn but that was at 3880 metres, which I expected. But Aonach Mor is only 1221 metres, although latitude may make a difference I suppose. Silly people though, as flipflops are not really suitable on any hillside, let alone on top of a mountain.

we shouldn't confuse stupid and ignorant. People may simply not know things. As mushroom says, perhaps it would help if the gondola company had notices about it? It's not the company's fault; but it may be one of those things that are just accidents.

I'm sure he's learnt not to try that again. They could talk to him, but he shouldn't pay the cost of his rescue- or we would all need insurance before we got out of bed.

I was composing the same response, word for word, when i camr across your post.

We cannot penalise people financially for simply not knowing something that others may take for granted, and this is a case in point.

So no, they were not a bunch of idiots, no they shouldnot be made to pay the cost of their rescue, and yes, they should ber given some salient advice for the future, but advice, not a finger-wagging lecture.
