Anybody Had Any Hard Landscaping Done Recently Or ...

has anyone paid a designer to sketch out a plan for their new garden? I'm interested to know how much I'm likely to have to pay for things like a 7m x patio raised beds etc and how much anyone has paid for a plan. I've sold my flat and bought another in the same small block, but my new one has a garden Yippee!! The bad news is it's east facing and quite small but it does get the sun in the morning up until lunchtime in the summer. The previous resident has done nothing with it and it has a veneer of rough grass and weeds over builders' rubble. Length is 8.23m X Width 7.41. Anybody got any idea? I'm in the South East so it won't be cheap.

£15000 which includes labour and materials
labour is around £200 per day

Oh my giddy aunt ff. How big is your garden and what did you have done if you don't mind telling me? Going into shock here.

about 15 feet square ,we had a lot of old rockery and garden removed by a digger also having the old wall taken away,then we have had a new wall with pillars and fence panels in between,it is on the corner of the drive way so the wall is along 2 sides,pathway and drive,then on the inside we have had paving laid

OK so you had a lot done, especially diggers and removing stuff. I can see that would be expensive. But all in 15 feet square???

yes there is a lot of work ,it has been 4 weeks so far,so you can see how it mounts up,that was the quotation but we have not paid yet,it could be slightly less,
if you can imagine the wall was shoulder height on the outside with the rockery and soil sloping down on the inside ,that is why there was such a lot to go ,the grab wagon had to come 3 times to remove all the rubble and old soil,then they had to dig down again for footings for the new wall and also we had to have a drain around 2 sides of the patio area by the house because there is no longer any soil at ground level,also some of the cost is because we had to have certain items like the pier caps and coping stones custom made as they are not in standard size or colours

Ah that explains. Four weeks work at £200/day/man for labour alone soon adds up. As the only access to my garden is through the communal hallway and then my flat it looks like I'm in trouble as it would take forever. I'll have to rethink, perhaps use the builders rubble as a base for raised beds or something. You've been very helpful, thank you again.

That is a shame , but I think you would find it very difficult because you will need road access for the deliveries and equipment , they can hardly take a cement mixer through or pallets of stone they are far too heavy , ours were dropped in by crane off the lorry.

Do you have a local college near you that runs a Horticultural course. At the one I went to (on a one day a week basis) many students took outside design commissions ,as long as you let them submit it as part of their portfolio, and were happy to do the actual work on a part-time basis.
that would be more economical, and gives them more experience of different plots. Worth a try anyway.

ff I think I shall have to have a long think about it and live with it for a while, if I can - I'm not very patient though. It's definitely a difficult plot, but better than no plot:-)
