How do I find my deceased husbands NI Number?

My pension have been asking for my dead husbands national insurance number, how would i find this? I have no old wage slips or anything as this was 11 years ago??? please help

You could try contacting your husband's former employer giving them as much detail as you can about his job role and dates of employment there. Under the Data Protection Act they are supposed to hold certain documents indefinitely and they may possibly have this information in their archives. If he was contributing to a pension scheme at some point they may have a record of his NI no.

Thanks so much for your answer, i phoned the employer and they no longer have his file- so no luck x
you local tax office should have this as they would have copies of P45's and P60's. NI number is on those. All the best!

Are you sure the pension people have a good reason for wanting his NI number? It seems very strange that they need it so long after his death.


You could try HMRC National Insurance Contributions Office, Longbenton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE98 1ZZ. They should have had a record of his NI contributions and hopefully might be able to find the number for you.
