I watched Cameron's speech and Miliband's response. As a result Cameron has gone up in my estimation and Miliband way down. Cameron had the guts to stand up for this country . Miliband as usual showed what it would be like if he was in power. A lackey to Europe . He hasn't even got the guts to offer us a referendum.
"..why is there consensus among nearly all our politicians that we should stay in?"
Mainly for the same reason that Mr Juncker is so keen on the idea - because it provides a lucrative new career for them when they have been soundly rejected by their domestic voters.
The EU has many merits. I would advocate ever closer ties to form a powerful trading bloc. Unfortunately that admirable aim has been lost along the line and most of its proponents - especially Mr Juncker - see Europe's future as a single nation state with national parliaments reduced to the status of parish councils. I have no wish to have to abide by a majority made up of of people who have no interest in the UK's wellbeing wahtsoever, especially when the UK electorate has no effective control over the decisions they make.

Not many UK politicians have taken jobs in Europe after leaving office in the UK. I can think of only a handful. Most are kick upstairs to the Lords or the latest scam is they get themselves elected to the ludicrous job of Police Commissioners. Furthering their future job prospects does not seem a credible reason for MPs from the main parties supporting EU membership.
